Narcissistic and Borderline Family Systems

Narcissistic and Borderline Family Systems

It can be difficult to find a therapist who truly understands the impact and wounds of being raised by a narcissist or someone with borderline personality disorder (BPD).  It can also be difficult to talk to friends and co-workers because they are often not able to relate to the deep wounds of being raised in this environment.  Being raised in a toxic environment by a narcissistic parent or someone with BPD creates significant emotional distress and is very painful and confusing.  If you are not taught to listen to your feelings or to establish healthy boundaries, you can create a pattern of attracting and sustaining relationships with abusive partners and you may choose a partner or friends with narcissistic or BPD traits.

My clients have seen life changing results since I began using Dr. Karyl McBride’s 5 step recovery model.  While her research focuses on narcissism, I have found her 5 step recovery model is also extremely helpful when working with adult children raised by someone with borderline personality disorder.  Many times, individuals have a mix of both narcissistic and borderline traits.

It is my goal to help you work through Dr. McBride’s 5-step recovery model which includes:

  • Accepting your mother’s limitations
  • Grieving the loss of the mother you wish you had
  • Creating a healthy psychological separation from your mother
  • Changing the negative internal messages created in childhood
  • Becoming your true, authentic self
  • Learning how to deal with your mother and create healthy boundaries
  • Stopping the legacy of distorted love

Partners, Parents and Siblings

In addition to working with adult children, I work with partners, parents and siblings of individuals with narcissistic and BPD traits.  Dr. McBride’s 5 step recovery process is applied in these situations.

I have received thorough training in Dr. McBride’s 5 step recovery model (from Dr. McBride) and I have received her highest level of certification.

My hope is to empower you through a supportive and validating relationship, to have the courage to create change, heal, establish healthy relationships and become your true authentic self.
